I have taught English for 39 years, starting in Japan where was studying and in the UK, and Taiwan. My interest is communication, hence my Master in Sociolinguistics, which focusses on the connection between people and their language. I have created course for kindergarten students in Taiwan, taxi drivers in Japan and was an in-house teacher for many businesses includina Fuiitsu, Nisho-lwai, Mistsuibussan Toyota As a language learner myself (6 so far) I completely empathise with those taking on the challenge of learning English. Teaching English is about helping people. My greatest satisfaction is seeing people developing their understanding and ability in English. Unless the teacher is genuinely invested in the students' improvement, they will just be delivering a service, like car maintenance in a garage. Learning to speak English well is an infinitely complex task, and can seem a daunting prospect, like attempting Everest! I believe the teacher should be constantly encouraging and praising the students, while leading them on an incremental journey to better English.
