I take inspiration for my teaching philosophy from a highly conceptual yet familiar picture: the drawing number 1 of the Little Prince. When the Little Prince asks the adults what his drawing depicts and whether it scares them, they only astonish, for it only reminds them of a hat, not “a boa constrictor digesting an elephant.”I intend to teach beyond what is there on “surface,” creating an environment wherein students feel free to articulate what their imagination and distinctive identities yield or see instead of teaching them how to meet the expectations of stereotypical, heteronormative set of rules. Allowing a space to nurture our critical thinking skills, creativity, and metacognition and creating a learners’ community are what makes it possible to infiltrate what is not actually their opinions, beliefs, or values but those of others. If children are taught to value their own unique perspectives and to have self-confidence in this regard, it is possible to raise children who express themselves better and who are more self-confident and do not experience identity confusion. My teaching philosophy is based on my view that reading and writing are transformational and that they help us understand ourselves and others, encouraging us to live multidimensional lives rather than one-dimensional ones. Before students can appreciate the value of learning, they must first recognize the value of what they are studying.
